So if you have been following our decluttering journey you will know that the Kon Mari method has had a profound effect on our home. In particular the clothing aspect, it really shows you the things you love and the things you do not wear, which has led me to really evaluate my wardrobe and delve into the wonders of the popular way of organising your wardrobe. If you are looking for ways to make life a little easier in the wardrobe department then this is it.
What is a Capsule Wardrobe…
Capsule wardrobe: a collection of a few essential items of clothing that don’t go out of fashion, such as skirts, trousers, and coats, which can then be augmented with seasonal pieces. source google
When I did the first Mari Kondo method clear out I followed the rules of only keeping items that ‘sparked joy’ which I did and truly felt happy with my wardrobe edit. Well, the Kon Mari wardrobe edit mark 2 to is about to go down. The beauty of her folding system is that you really do get to see they items you wear daily and the items that go untouched in your closet. I began to see a pattern of the clothes I was reaching for and realised wow I have been hoarding! Holding on to items that I thought I might wear and truly once loved or things that were in a perfect condition that I know I wasn’t ever going to wear.
I came to the conclusion all these clothes I’m not wearing is causing unnecessary stress when getting ready. It’s probably everyone’s ones dream and certainly a busy mummy’s dreams to look ‘ put together in the mornings’ when heading out for the school run. Having 10 minutes to get dressed is not everyone woman’s idea of fabulous but it is a reality. What is the solution? I did some research and the term capsule wardrobe kept coming back to me. I knew the first step was to get rid of the clothes I thought I loved. Yes, that’s right, get rid of things. Probably not what one would think to do when you feel like you never have anything to wear. There has got to be some benefits to having less clothes right?
Benefits of a capsule wardrobe
GETTING DRESS BECOMES A BREEZE AND QUICK AND EASY TO DO
REDUCE THE AMOUNT OF BINGE SHOPPING AND A HEALTHIER BANK ACCOUNT
HELP YOU FIND YOUR STYLE
ALWAYS FEEL COMFORTABLE AND NICE IN YOUR CLOTHES
Be ruthless with you wardrobe edit
First of all, you are going to need to go through your entire wardrobe and assess what you want to keep. Typically a capsule wardrobe has about 30 to 40 items in it at one time. So it’s time to say goodbye to some things.
I made 4 piles and did a slightly less fabulous version of ‘Sex and the city’s’ famous ceremonially clearing out of her fabulous closet. My piles consisted of simply the below.
GIVE TO CHARITY
SEASONAL ( ITEMS THAT CAN BE STORED AWAY)
You have to be ruthless and I mean ruthless like I said the folding system allowed me make my choices with ease though and had took out the guess work for me. I was holding on to too many memories with my clothing and half of the things I thought I loved were taking up space and I just didn’t wear. I worked in fashion retail for many years and I acquired a lot of clothes and shoes in my time which I couldn’t let go of. I used to come home with bags of shopping, samples from work and stuff them into my wardrobe and get a buzz off it to. Such a stark comparison to life after getting married having and kids. I no longer felt like the fashionisista I once was and going clothes shopping became a chore and rarely happened. Hence, when a special occasion came up I would scrabble to go buy something new because I felt I had nothing to wear, despite having a wardrobe full of things. In my new adventures into mumyhood and over 30’s club I realised … I hate to be cold, I can’t really do ridiculous heels anymore and I just want to be comfortable. Nevertheless, I still want to feel classic and chic every time I step out the door though so knew it was time for me to really give my wardrobe some serious thought.
So 3 bags lighter
I was surprised I could make 3 full bin bags full, this is after a huge edit from the first Kon Mar clear out, it’s a weird feeling to have less things in my wardrobe and actually feel happy about that. It already feels easier to get ready in the mornings but I do still have gaps in my wardrobe that need filling. Not going to rush out and buy huge amounts yet, going to live with my wardrobe edit for now, to see if any other patterns emerge.
Phase one of building my capsule wardrobe has begun, I now have a better basic starting point to see what is missing and what I need to add to my shopping list to build my capsule wardrobe.
Don’t get me wrong all my wardrobe problems aren’t fixed. You are going to make some mistakes, there isn’t an exact science to having the perfect wardrobe for yourself, it is a little bit of trial and error. So if you are not fully ready to get rid of things maybe keep your piles of edited clothes for a few weeks just encase you added an item that you actually do love and miss..
What Should I have in my capsule wardrobe?
It’s a process and the more you really give true thought to your style and how you want to dress it will become easier here are some things to think about when creating yours
GREAT SILHOUETTES- WEAR THINGS THAT SUIT YOU YOUR BODY TYPE AND THAT REFLECT YOUR PERSONAL STYLE
GREAT BASE OF NEUTRAL COLOURS, WITH A GREAT BASE YOU CAN ADD POPS OF CHEAPER SEASONAL ITEMS IN TO MIX IT UP NOW AND AGAIN
INVEST IN KEY PIECES, SHOES PURSES- QUALITY OVER QUANTITY
IF YOU WANT TO ADD TO EXTRA PIECES PURCHASE CURRENT TRENDS FROM CHEAPER STORES, THEY WILL PROBABLY WEAR OUT AND WON’T BREAK THE BANK
TRY NOT TO ADD LOGOS AND PRINTS TO YOUR CAPSULE IF YOU HAVE THINGS THAT YOU LOVE, LIMIT IT TO 1 OR 2 ITEMS AND ONES THAT AREN’T BUSY PRINTS
IF NECESSARY, MAKE A SMALLER SUB-CATEGORY FOR ITEMS FOR E.G JEWELLERY. FOR ME, I DIDN’T INCLUDE WORKOUT CLOTHES
Having putting thought into what I have left I have started pairing things together to see how I can edit them into the bases of my starting capsule wardrobe. There are a few things I have that now don’t go together.
The Mr and I recently went out to dinner with family and for once there was no scramble to buy something off the internet. I loved my outfit and felt comfortable, chic and above all warm lol.
